Medical Treatment Visa (Subclass 602)
The Medical Treatment Visa (Subclass 602) lets you travel to or remain in Australia for short-term medical treatment, consultations, organ donation, or to support a family member undergoing treatment. It can also help certain onshore applicants who are medically unfit to depart.
Who can apply? (Am I eligible?)
You may qualify if you are:
1) A patient seeking treatment or consultation
You’re coming to Australia to receive medical treatment (including specialist consultations or follow-up care).
You’ll need: confirmed treatment arrangements with an Australian provider, proof of how all costs will be paid, and evidence you won’t be a public charge unless a government authority has agreed to cover costs.
2) An organ donor
You’re travelling to donate an organ for transplant in Australia.
You’ll need: transplant arrangements, health clearance and proof that all costs (medical + living) are covered.
3) A support person (carer)
You’re accompanying a patient to provide emotional and practical support.
You’ll need: evidence of the patient’s approved treatment visa/arrangements and your own health clearance and funding.
4) A PNG (Western Province) medical evacuee to Queensland
PNG citizens living in Western Province with an approved medical evacuation to a Queensland hospital.
5) Medically unfit to depart (onshore only)
You are in Australia, aged 50+, recently refused a permanent visa only because of health, and a government medical officer confirms you’re medically unfit to leave.
(Special concessions apply to some criteria in this pathway.)
6) Financial hardship / compelling personal reasons (onshore only)
If circumstances changed after arrival and you now face financial hardship, can’t leave for reasons beyond your control, and have compelling reasons to work or remain for a short period tied to medical circumstances, limited onshore options may exist. We will assess these carefully.
Key requirements
Genuine temporary intent: You’ll visit or remain only as long as needed for treatment/support.
Treatment arranged: Appointment/Admission/Consultation letters with procedure codes, treating specialist details, and estimated length of stay.
All costs covered: Proof of who pays hospital fees, doctor fees, accommodation and living costs (for you and any support person).
Health & biosecurity: You must not pose a public health risk.
No disadvantage to Australians: Your treatment must not displace Australian citizens/permanent residents from medically necessary services (except in certain onshore health-concession cases).
Funds & insurance: Strong evidence of funds/insurance (or government approval to cover costs).
Character & identity: Standard checks apply.
How long can I stay? Will I get multiple entries?
The 602 visa is temporary. The Department sets:
A validity end date (when travel must occur), and
A period you can remain in Australia (matched to your treatment plan).
Single or multiple entries may be granted depending on medical needs and itinerary
(e.g., pre-op consult → return home → come back for surgery).
Visa conditions (what you can and can’t do)
No work in Australia (work rights are not the purpose of this visa).
Study limit: generally, up to 3 months short study/training if relevant to care (e.g., caregiver education).
A “No Further Stay” condition may be attached in some cases, meaning you can’t apply for most visas while in Australia unless the condition is waived.
You must depart before your visa expires unless you’ve secured another lawful pathway.
We explain your conditions clearly, so you remain compliant.
