Australian Citizenship Services

Becoming an Australian citizen is one of the most important milestones in your migration
journey. Citizenship offers you the right to vote, apply for an Australian passport, work in the
public service and defence forces, and fully participate in Australia’s democratic community.
At Visa 1 Migration Pty Ltd, we provide end-to-end support to ensure your application is
prepared correctly and submitted with confidence.

General Eligibility Requirements for Australian Citizenship

To apply for Australian citizenship by conferral, applicants must usually:
➢ Hold a valid permanent visa or be an eligible New Zealand citizen.
➢ Have been living in Australia lawfully for at least 4 years, including at least 12
months as a permanent resident.
➢ Meet the residency requirements (allowing only limited time spent outside Australia).
➢ Be of good character.
Demonstrate knowledge of Australia and the responsibilities and privileges of
citizenship (by sitting the citizenship test if required).
➢ Intend to reside in, or maintain a close and continuing association with, Australia

Recent Changes – New Zealand Citizens & SCV 444 Holders

From 1 July 2023, significant reforms were introduced:
➢ Holders of a Special Category Visa (SCV subclass 444) who have lived in Australia
for at least 4 years are now considered permanent residents for the purpose of
citizenship eligibility.
➢ This removes the need for eligible New Zealand citizens to first apply for a permanent
visa.
➢ These changes recognise the contribution of New Zealand citizens to Australia and
provide a direct and faster pathway to Australian citizenship
