The Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) allows qualified professionals with skills in demand to live and work in Australia permanently without employer, family, or state sponsorship. This visa is points-tested and designed for individuals who receive an invitation through skill select based on their education, work experience, and English proficiency.

Eligibility Requirements (Points-Tested Stream)

To qualify for the Subclass 189 visa, you must meet the following mandatory criteria at the time of
invitation and application:

(a) Occupation & Skills Assessment

Your nominated occupation must appear on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
You must have a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority.
Skills assessments used for a Subclass 485 visa are not acceptable.
The assessment must be valid at the time of invitation (usually valid for 3 years).

(b) Invitation to Apply

You must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect.
The Department of Home Affairs will invite high-ranking applicants to lodge a visa application based on points and occupation demand.

(c) Age

You must be under 45 years of age at the time of invitation.

(d) English Language Proficiency

You must demonstrate at least Competent English (e.g., IELTS 6.0 overall or PTE 50 each band).
Higher scores may earn additional points.

(e) Points Score

You must achieve a minimum 65 points under the General Skilled Migration points test.
Points are awarded for:
Age
English proficiency
Skilled employment experience (in Australia and overseas)
Recognised qualifications
Australian study requirement
Partner skills or single status points
Professional year or NAATI credentialled community language

(f) Health & Character

You and all included family members must meet Australian health and character requirements.
Health examinations and police clearances are mandatory.

Visa Application Charge (VAC) – AUD 3,755 for the main applicant (subject to change)
Additional charges apply for spouse and dependents
Health examinations, police clearances, skills assessment and English tests are charged separately
Processing times depend on the occupation and number of invitations issued each round

After Visa Grant

If you are outside Australia, you must make your first entry by the date set in your grant letter.
