Skills Assessment
Home / Skills Assessment
Why is Skill Assessment Needed?
For skilled migration to Australia, applicants must demonstrate that their qualifications and work
experience match Australian standards. This is why a skills assessment is the first and
most important step in the migration process.
A positive skills assessment is mandatory for all points-tested visas, including:
➢ Subclass 189 – Skilled Independent Visa
➢ Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated Visa
➢ Subclass 491 – Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa
It is also required for employer-sponsored visas under all streams, including:
➢ Subclass 482 – Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa
➢ Subclass 494 – Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional Visa
➢ Subclass 186 – Employer Nomination Scheme Visa
➢ Subclass 187 – Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) Visa
Without a valid skills assessment, your visa application cannot be processed.
Recognised Assessing Authorities
There are several assessment bodies authorised by the Australian Government, and the correct
authority depends on your nominated occupation. The most common ones include:
➢ TRA (Trades Recognition Australia) – For trade occupations, Job Ready Program,
and Provisional Skills Assessments
➢ VETASSESS – For both professional and trade occupations
➢ EA (Engineers Australia) – For all engineering-related occupations (through CDR
reports or accredited qualifications)
➢ IPA (Institute of Public Accountants) – For accounting and finance professionals
➢ ACWA (Australian Community Workers Association) – For social/community
workers
➢ AITSL (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership) – For school
teachers
➢ All other specific bodies depending on the profession
