Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)
The Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) allows international students who recently completed eligible Australian qualifications to live, work and study in Australia temporarily. It offers valuable poststudy work experience and a potential pathway toward permanent residency. There are two Work streams for international graduates Post-Vocational and Post-Higher Education.
Stream 1- Post-Vocational Education Work Stream (PVEW)
This stream is for students who have completed a trade, diploma or vocational qualification in Australia.
1. Visa Duration:
Up to 18 months in Australia.
Hong Kong or British National Overseas BNO passport holders: up to 5 years.
2. Eligibility requirements
Age: 35 or under (under 50 for HK/BNO).
Australian Study Requirement (ASR): awarded at least one associate degree, diploma or trade qualification within 6 months before application and met ASR (usually 92 weeks CRICOSregistered study in English).
Eligible Student Visa: must have held an eligible student visa in the last 6 months before the application.
Nominated occupation: must be on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
Skills assessment: must hold a positive skills assessment for the nominated occupation from the relevant authority.
English language requirement:
– IELTS: overall 6.5 with minimum 5.5 each band; or
– PTE Academic (on or after 7 Aug 2025): overall 55 (L40, R42, W41, S39); or
– PTE Academic (on or before 6 Aug 2025): overall 57 (L43, R48, W51, S42).
Health insurance: maintain adequate cover for entire stay.
Health and character: must satisfy Australian Government requirements.

Stream 2- Post-Higher Education Work Stream (PHEW)
This stream applies to graduates who have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral degree from an Australian institution.
1. Visa validity
Typically, 2 years, depending on qualification.
PhD graduates: up to 4 years.
Hong Kong/BNO: up to 5 years.
Indian nationals: Bachelor (first-class STEM/ICT) or Master’s (coursework/extended) = 3-year visa.
2. Eligibility requirements
Age: 35 or under (under 50 for HK/BNO).
ASR: awarded an eligible degree within 6 months before application and met ASR (two academic years/92 weeks CRICOS study in English).
Skills assessment: a positive assessment may be needed depending on occupation and pathway.
English language: same as PVEW – IELTS 6.5 (5.5 each) or PTE thresholds above.
Eligible Student Visa: must have held an eligible student visa in the last 6 months before the application.
Health insurance & character: required for the entire visa duration.
